Saint Lawrence, originally from Spain, was ordained deacon in 257 and became one of the closest collaborators of Pope Sixtus II. During the persecution of Emperor Valerian, he distributed the Church’s wealth among the poor and presented them saying: “These are the treasures of the Church.” Condemned to a cruel death on the gridiron, he was buried in Campo Verano, along the Via Tiburtina, where basilicas were built in his honor. In this video we explore his life, his martyrdom, and the history of the Basilica of Saint Lawrence, destroyed during World War II and rebuilt as a testimony of faith and charity.
