In 1380, Saint Bernardino of Siena was born — a great Franciscan preacher, witness to the name of Jesus (IHS), and a key figure in a remarkable period of spiritual renewal. Unjustly accused of heresy, he defended himself in Rome and was acquitted. He stayed at the convent of Ara Coeli, next to the Capitoline Hill, where his dedicated chapel still stands today, masterfully frescoed by Pinturicchio with scenes from his life and evangelizing mission.
