After the end of the Western Schism (1378–1418), Pope Martin V promoted the political, cultural, and artistic revival of Rome. While many popes of the time neglected their spiritual and reforming mission, they became major patrons of the arts and letters. Under their patronage, Rome emerged as one of the key centers of Humanism and the Renaissance.
