One of the most renowned early Christian martyrs was St. Ignatius of Antioch, who gave his life around the year 107, most likely in the Flavian Amphitheatre, today known as the Colosseum in Rome. Arrested in Syria and taken to the Eternal City, he wrote several letters of faith, including one to the Church of Rome, where he expressed his burning desire to imitate the Passion of Christ: «I am God’s wheat, ground by the teeth of beasts, to become the pure bread of Christ». A powerful testimony of love for Jesus that still inspires today.
