Saint Catherine of Siena (1347–1380) completed the mission begun by Saint Bridget, convincing Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome from Avignon in 1376. After his death, the Church was thrown into crisis with the start of the Western Schism (1378–1418), as rival popes were elected and unity was shattered. In this video, we explore Catherine’s incredible life: a Dominican tertiary, mystic, spiritual writer, and tireless defender of Church unity. In 1378, she moved to Rome to dedicate herself fully to reconciliation and peace, praying daily in St. Peter’s Basilica despite her physical suffering, and writing powerful letters to Church leaders. We visit the places she lived, died, and is venerated today: her house on via Santa Chiara, the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, and other sacred sites tied to her mission and the Dominican tradition.
